An acute shortage of electricity sub-stations means that citizens in the state capital will continue to suffer frequent power break-downs, tripping of supply and voltage fluctuations. Greater Hyderabad is short of two 400 KV, six 220 KV, ten 132 KV and four dozen 33 KV electricity sub-stations.
The existing power infrastructure is overloaded, resulting in frequent breakdowns in supply. What’s more, there is only one workshop to repair transformers, located at Erragadda, which is why it takes so long for transformers to be repaired. A second workshop proposed in the old city has remained on paper.

There are nearly 30 lakh power connections in the city and the existing infrastructure is insufficient to take the load.
In the last three years, the number of connections has increased from 24.12 lakh in 2006-07 to 29.37 lakh in 2009-2010. The demand for power has shot up from 1,538 MW in 2006-07 to 1,881 MW in 2009-10. What’s more, the power requirement for the city is projected to increase to 5,000 MW by the end of 2015.
A senior APTransco official said work is in full swing to construct a 400 KV sub-station at Shankarpally. Estimates worth another `2,696 crore have been finalised to construct 400 KV, 220 KV, 132 KV and 33 KV sub-stations, he said.
