108 emergency services have improved: GVK-EMRI

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><b><span id="advenueINTEXT" name="advenueINTEXT">HYDERABAD: Countering criticism that frequent breakdowns were seriously affecting the functioning of 108 ambulance services across the state, the GVK Emergency Management and Research Institute (EMRI) on Friday clarified that the quality and response time of emergency services in fact had improved over the past two years. <br /> <br /> GVK-EMRI representative Siddhartha Bhattacharya said they were operating 752 state-of-the-art ambulances in the state, which were manned by trained emergency medical technicians, pilots and supported by highly qualified professionals. "We continue to provide world-class pre-hospital care 24x7 to over 3,200 critical cases of medical emergencies every day in the state. In fact, 90% of the total 35,000 emergency calls per day are picked up in the first ring itself and 5% in the second ring itself. An overwhelming reduction in the number of non-emergency calls has enabled us to handle critical emergencies better. The average response time in urban areas is 15 minutes and 20 to 25 minutes in rural and tribal areas," he said. <br /> <br /> Responding to queries on the large number of breakdowns of 108 ambulances in the state, GVK EMRI AP operations PPP head Swaroop MSR said they operate 50 spare ambulances and at any point in time 30 ambulances of the fleet undergo service. "The wear and tear of these ambulances is very high. As a policy, GVK EMRI does not operate any ambulance with inadequate medical equipment necessary for emergency services. We have well-defined emergency management protocols and embedded technologies in place to improve the operational efficiency of the service," he pointed out. <br /> <br /> The EMRI official said they were hopeful of signing a MoU with the state government by this month-end and put to rest certain doubts among the EMRI staff about the feasibility of the PPP agreement. </span></b></div>

Depressed by her illness and her husband's sudden death three months ago, she consumed cow dung powder and killed herself, police said. Business losses drove 43-year-old B Natarajan of Ramanathapuram in the city to end his life. <div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><b><span id="advenueINTEXT" name="advenueINTEXT">NEW DELHI: After successfully leading the agitation on <a href="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/search?q=Lokpal%20Bill">Lokpal Bill</a>, social activist <a href="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Anna-Hazare">Anna Hazare</a> has struck a note of caution. <br /> <br /> Expressing apprehension over parliamentarians' readiness to pass a strong anti-corruption legislation he has asked his supporters to be prepared for a "bigger battle". <br /> <br /> Addressing the media, the 73-year-old social activist said "power-hungry" politicians will not easily accept any bill having stringent provisions against corruption or "shed" the power they enjoy. <br /> <br /> "But on this issue, people will get together," he said adding, MPs and MLAs were being elected to serve the people and not to be their masters. "But they (elected representatives) have forgotten this." <br /> <br /> Hazare, who has set August 15 as the deadline for passage of the bill, said, "I feel there will be need for a bigger agitation in future (to get the bill passed in Parliament)." <br /> <br /> "I don't think they (MPs) will easily accede to the passage of the bill as they feel it will cut down their powers." <br /> <br /> He said there is no fear among those who indulge in corruption. The proposed Lok Pal will act a deterrent for the corrupt and put a "big break" on the menace, Hazare felt. <br /> <br /> Agencies like the CBI, the CVC and others are under government control and so they cannot fight corruption effectively, he said adding, when the Lok Pal Bill comes into effect, the authority will have autonomy and no one will be able to put a spoke in its functioning. <br /> <br /> Replying to a question, he dismissed the possibility of misuse of the proposed law for political purposes. <br /> <br /> Admitting that he did not expect the groundswell of support for his campaign witnessed in the last five days, he said people joined him in such large numbers as they were fed up with corruption. "They have had enough of it." <br /> <br /> Asked if he has come out as a "national hero" to the youth like Mahatma Gandhi, Hazare said, "I am not worthy of even sitting at Gandhiji's feet. But he has influenced my thought process." </span></b></div>

Silver gives 46% returns in 3 months, gold just 6%

Returns on the yellow metal on the other hand have been almost stagnant during the same period. <br /> <br /> This is despite the fact that gold touched another all-time high of $1473 in the global market on Friday with the previous high just a couple of days ago. Silver being quoted $40.31 an ounce is still $10 away from the all-time high achieved in the 1980s. Gold's high did not make much impact in domestic market on account of a stronger rupee which offset the increase in dollar prices. <a href="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/search?q=Silver%20prices">Silver prices</a> on the other hand took bigger leaps overcoming even the strong rupee factor, analysts said. <br /> <br /> Silver prices moved in the range of Rs 41,000 to 46,000 in the month of January. These have now reached Rs 60,000 level. Somebody who purchased silver in January would have gained anywhere between 46% to 30% in just three months. Gold on the other hand was Rs 19,900 to Rs 21,200 in January and is now at Rs 21,300 a tola (per 10 grams). This is a gain of 6% to 0.47%. In the international market, gold was around $1360 an ounce in January and has now touched $1473 growing by 8%. Silver rates have jumped by 60% from $25 an ounce to $40 now. <br /> <br /> Gold prices grew fuelled by a weakening greenback against Euro as well as international crises like that in <a href="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Libya">Libya</a> and <a href="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Egypt">Egypt</a>. Silver prices, which follow gold too, are being further strengthened by a substantial industrial demand. Sizable purchases by industries that expect a further rise are causing the steep rise, said Nitin Khandelwal, a wholesaler from Akola. <br /> <br /> Nilesh Rathi of SMS Bhav, a bullion rate information agency, feels now speculation is fuelling the silver prices. The prices have long reached a peak if only fundamentals are considered. There is no reason for such sharp increases within a few days unless there is heavy speculative buying, he says. The phenomenon has led to a massive increase in buying of silver bars for investment, say sources in business. However, there have been mixed reports on the demand for ornaments or silver utensils and gift articles. </span></b></div>

He was later remanded in judicial custody after being produced before a magistrate's court. <br /> <br /> The police said Monica, who suffered a head injury after a road accident last month, went to a centre in Royapettah where Dr Karunanidhi conducted a scan. He then suggested some tips to help her resolve the problem and Monica gave him her mobile phone number. According to Monica's complaint lodged at the all-women police station in Triplicane, she first received ordinary messages before getting lewd text messages. <br /> <br /> "Preliminary investigation revealed that the doctor sent nearly 50 SMS a day to the victim. We have collected the calls and messages details of the doctor from the private service provider," a police official said <br /> <br /> Dr Karunanidhi, who admitted to sending the messages, was booked under the provisions of the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Harassment of Women Act, the police said. </span></b></div>
