<b>The indictments sparked retaliation from the 'Anonymous' hacktivist  group, who announced in a tweet that they had downed the websites of the  US Justice Department, Universal Music, and the Recording Industry  Association of America.</b><br />
<b>The founder of the Hong Kong-based Megaupload was among four people  arrested in connection with what the Justice Department and FBI  described as 'among the largest criminal copyright cases ever brought by  the United States'.</b><br />
<b>In a statement, the Justice Department and FBI said the seven were  'responsible for massive worldwide online piracy of numerous types of  copyrighted works, through Megaupload.com and other related sites'.</b><br />
<b>They generated more than $175 million in criminal proceeds and caused  "more than half a billion dollars in harm to copyright owners," the  statement said, by offering pirated copies of movies, TV programs and  other content.</b><br />
<b>The announcement of the indictment came one day after Wikipedia,  Google and other websites staged a protest against congressional  legislation intended to crack down on online piracy. </b><br />
<b>Attempts to access the Justice Department, Universal Music, and  Recording Industry Association of America portals failed, following the  action by Anonymous on Thursday.</b><br />
<b>Megaupload Ltd and another company, Vestor Ltd, were indicted by a  grand jury in Virginia and charged with racketeering conspiracy, various  copyright infringement counts and conspiring to commit money  laundering.</b><br />
<b>Among those indicted was the founder of Megaupload and sole  shareholder of Vestor, Kim Dotcom, 37, a resident of Hong Kong and New  Zealand who is also known as Kim Schmitz and Kim Tim Jim Vestor.</b><br />
<b>The others charged are Finn Batato, 38, of Germany; Julius Bencko,  35, of Slovakia; Sven Echternach, 39, of Germany; Mathias Ortmann, 40,  of Germany; Andrus Nomm, 32, of Estonia; and Bram van der Kolk, 29, of  the Netherlands.</b><br />

<b>Doctors should routinely ask patients about their sleeping habits as  they may be at the root of other disorders, according to the study in  'The Lancet' medical journal. </b><br />
<b>The researchers from the Université Laval in Canada and the  University of Wisconsin in the US said that insomnia has 'substantial  long-term effects' on people's physical and psychological health, the  'Daily Mail' reported. </b><br />
<b>They said: "Despite advances in diagnosis and management insomnia is  still under-recognised and often goes untreated. In view of the high  prevalence and substantial morbidities of insomnia, patients should  routinely be asked about sleep problems by healthcare providers." </b><br />
<b>The study says that people who have between six and eight hours sleep  a night are likely to live longer and have better health, while those  getting less than six hours are more at risk of dying prematurely. </b><br />
<b>The optimum duration for sleep is around seven hours. People with  insomnia are more than five times as likely to experience anxiety and  depression, are at more than double the risk of developing congestive  heart failure and diabetes, and higher risk of premature death, say the  researchers. </b><br />
<b>The study says some of the most commonly prescribed drugs such as  antidepressants and antihistamines have yet to be approved for treating  insomnia. </b><br />
<b>The researchers said that it insomniacs could be provided help  through the use of innovative methods such as telephone consultations,  group therapy, and self-help approaches via the internet. </b><br />
<b>"I've drawn up guidance on the 86 identifiable sleep disorders for  use in specialist sleep centres. We urgently need to pay more attention  to sleep with clear advice to children in schools, parents and  throughout adult life," said Dr Neil Stanley, an independent sleep  expert. </b><br />

<b>If the genuineness of their discovery is confirmed by planetary  scientists, then the heavenly body, thought to be gaseous and around the  size of Neptune, will be named 'Threapleton Holmes B', the newspaper  said. </b><br />
<b>In fact, the pair made the discovery after spotting changes in light patterns in an image from NASA's Kepler space telescope. </b><br />
<b>The unusual patterns suggested a planet appears to be orbiting a sun  called SPH10066540, which lies between 600 and 3,000 light years away. </b><br />
<b>The image of the new planet has been posted online at  'Planethunters.org', an Oxford University project that asks the public  to sift through time-lapsed data from NASA in the hope of new  discoveries. </b><br />
<b>Holmes of Peterborough said: "I've never even had a telescope. I've  had a passing interest in where things are in the sky, but never had any  more knowledge about it than that. Being the one to find something is a  very exciting position." </b><br />
<b>Dr Chris Lintott at Oxford University said: "The candidate planet is  unlikely to have life because it is too hot. It is too close to its star  and the sheer heat makes life unlikely." </b><br />
<b>This is believed to be only the third time that British amateurs have  found a new planet. The first was William Herschel who discovered  Uranus in 1781. </b><br />

<b>The study, based on a survey in Britain, has found that average  Britons spend bickering eight minutes a day during the first month and  two thirds have even broken up with a lover due to January blues. </b><br />
<b>Bad weather, dark days and stretched finances mean more people stay  at home, getting on each other's nerves. In fact, the month's blues  means people spend 15 hours a day at home - causing 'cabin fever', the  'Daily Mail' reported. </b><br />
<b>The survey of over 1,000 Britons, commissioned by Sheilas' Wheels  home insurance, found that long hours at home result in up to 20  arguments with their other halves during the month. </b><br />
<b>In contrast, Britons spend just 10 hours, five minutes at home during the summer, and have 16 arguments, the poll found. </b><br />
<b>The January blues struck 38 per cent with under 25s being the worst  hit at 48 per cent and almost half of the respondents said January was  the most depressing month of the year, according to the survey. </b><br />
<b>And, because of the dark times 65 per cent have ended a relationship  in January and seven per cent even confessed that they had broken up  with someone as part of a New Year's resolution, it found. </b><br />
<b>The study also found 59 per cent admitted that January was the most  difficult month to get out of bed. Behavioural psychologist Donna Dawson  said: "The lack of sunlight can make us feel lethargic and depressed,  and the lack of exercise can make us feel edgy, irritable and stressed.  Add boredom to the mix, with financial issues and too much empty time  with our partners, and you have the perfect recipe for arguments and  break-ups." </b><br />

<b>The antioxidant actions of grapes are believed to be responsible for these protective effects.</b><br />
<b>A new study compared the impact of an antioxidant-rich diet on vision  using mice prone to developing retinal damage in old age in much the  same way as humans do.</b><br />
<b>Mice either received a grape-enriched diet, a diet with added lutein, or a normal diet.</b><br />
<b>The result showed that the grape-enriched diet protected against  oxidative damage of the retina and prevented blindness in those mice  consuming grapes.</b><br />
<b>While lutein was also effective, grapes were found to offer significantly more protection.</b><br />
<b>“The protective effect of the grapes in this study was remarkable,  offering a benefit for vision at old age even if grapes were consumed  only at young age,” said Silvia Finnemann, PhD, principal investigator,  Department of Biological Sciences, Fordham University in New York.</b><br />
<div class="related-articles"><h5 class="article-title"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">Dr. Finnemann noted that results from her study suggest that  age-related vision loss is a result of cumulative, oxidative damage over  time.</span></h5></div><b>“A lifelong diet enriched in natural antioxidants, such as those in  grapes, appears to be directly beneficial for RPE and retinal health and  function,” she revealed.</b><br />
<b>Age-related macular degeneration is a progressive eye condition,  leading to the deterioration of the center of the retina, called the  macula. It is the leading cause of blindness in the elderly.</b><br />
<b>Aging of the retina is associated with increased levels of oxidative  damage, and oxidative stress is thought to play a pivotal role in the  development of AMD.</b><br />
<b>In AMD, there is a known decline in the function of retinal pigment  epithelium cells (RPE), which are the support cells for the  photoreceptors in the retina that are critical to the process of  converting light into sight.</b><br />
<b>The RPE dysfunction is caused by 1) a build-up of metabolic waste  products (known as lipofuscin) in the RPE itself and 2) an oxidation  burden on the RPE that compromise important metabolic pathways.</b><br />
<b>The resulting dysfunction, distress and often death of the RPE cells leads to AMD.</b><br />
<b>This study showed that adding grapes to the diet prevented blindness  in mice by significantly decreasing the build-up of lipofuscin and  preventing the oxidative damage to the RPE, thus ensuring optimal  functioning of this critical part of the retina.</b><br />
<b>“Preserving eye health is a key concern as we age and this study  shows that grapes may play a critical role in achieving this,” said  Kathleen Nave, president of the California Table Grape Commission.</b><br />
<b>“This is good news for consumers of all ages who enjoy grapes, and  adds to the growing body of evidence that grapes offer an array of  health benefits,” Nave added.</b><br />

<b>K. Panduranga (33), an auto driver who resides in Banshankari IInd  stage proved that there are still some honest people in a world where  people kill even their kin for money.</b><br />
<b>On January 14, Pavaman Acharya, a resident of J.P Nagar VIth phase  hired an auto from Banshankari BMTC bus stop after withdrawing Rs 5 lakh  for his brother Madusudhan’s treatment. Being preoccupied with other  things, he forgot to take his bag of money from the auto after he  reached his destination. Cursing his fate, he filed a complaint at the  J.P Nagar police station.</b><br />
<b>He could not believe his luck when the auto driver landed at his door step and handed over the cash.</b><br />
<b>Panduranga, the auto driver who returned back the money told <i>Deccan Chronicle</i>,  “Three years ago, someone stole my autorickshaw which was parked on the  road in front of my house. After I lost the auto which earned me my  daily bread, I was very depressed and searched for the auto across the  city. I even lodged a police complaint in vain. But miraculously, I  found my auto nearly a month later. </b><br />
<b>"A friend of mine informed that the auto was parked 2 km away from my  house. I rushed to the spot and found the wheels were stolen. I got it  repaired and began using it again. The cost of the auto is around Rs  40,000 and I know the value of money. </b><br />
<b>“If Rs 40,000 could distress me so much, I could empathise with the  owner who forgot the bag of cash.”  He said he didn’t even count how  much money was in the bag. His only priority was to return it to its  owner. The man hired the auto from Banashankari bus stop and took it to J  P Nagar Phase VI and that was the last hire of that day on Saturday. </b><br />
<b>"Next day, he found the bag in the rear seat and assumed that the  person who got down at J P Nagar Phase VI must have left it. Since he  was familiar with the area, he went to the same house and returned the  money.</b><br />
<b>“After the money was handed over, we came to the J P Nagar police  station for completing the formalities since a complaint was filed. The  DCP (South) issued me a certificate of appreciation. </b><br />
<b>“After returning the cash, I learnt that the money was meant for a  person who was undergoing treatment at a private hospital. Anyhow I  believe in the philosophy that God will be good to all good people. When  I found my lost auto, it was my duty to return the cash and help the  person who had lost it,” Panduranga added.</b><br />

<b>Highly toxic in nature, they can be a source of severe health hazard if not treated properly, according to experts.</b><br />
<b>While most hospitals accused of this gross violation are in and  around Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts, a significant number are in  other districts as well. </b><br />
<b>Officials told this newspaper that hospital authorities are supposed  to treat and disinfect waste water — generated primarily from their  laboratories, laundry of blood-soaked and dirty clothes and sheets, and  water used to clean and disinfect different parts of a hospital.</b><br />
<b>Interestingly, one of the standard tests for effluent generated from  hospitals (the Bioassay Test) says the survival rate of fish after 96  hours in such water should be 90 per cent.</b><br />
<b>While hospitals are required to fulfil these parameters, a whole lot  of them have failed to do so, an APPCB official said. Many of these  hospitals, when connected with sewers, operate without a terminal sewage  treatment plant, and many are not connected to public sewers at all,  the official added.</b><br />
<b>If fish cannot survive in this untreated water, one can imagine the  level of contamination in such waste water, flushed in regular drains  that find their way into water bodies and eventually back into the  ecosystem, the official said.</b><br />
<b>According to the pollution control board official, 13 hospitals in  the state have their own sewage treatment plants (STPs). While most  corporate hospitals follow norms by cleansing their waste water, the  “small hospitals” and, in certain cases, government hospitals are the  main culprits, it was found.<br />
“Any negligence in handling biomedical waste can result in unimaginable  damage. But most people are unaware of the repercussions,” the official  said.</b><br />
<b>The Board plans strict action against the errant hospitals, the official said. </b><br />

Ramachandraiah and Ganta Srinivasa Rao who were inducted into the  Cabinet on Thursday threw up some anxious moments.</b><br />

Kiran Kumar Reddy offered the new ministers  infrastructure and investment (which had fallen vacant after the  resignation of Komatireddy Venkat Reddy), endowments (held as additional  charge by Ponnala Lakshmaiah) and textiles and small-scale industries,  hitherto held by Dr P. Shankar Rao who was sacked after he refused to  quit on Thursday.</b><br />
<b>The official notification will be issued only on Friday by which time  the new ministers would have finalised their choice among the three  portfolios.</b><br />
<b>The problem in allotting portfolios, according to sources, arose due  to the Chief Minister’s reluctance to part with crucial portfolios like  commercial taxes and energy as had been sought by Praja Rajyam chief  Chiranjeevi. </b><br />
<b>The Chief Minister explained to the PR chief that he was keeping  these significant portfolios aside for Telangana leaders who would be  inducted into the Cabinet at a later date.</b><br />
