A. Rizwanullah, a class 9 student, can boast of studying in a green school.
His East Coast Matriculation School in Neelankarai has been awarded the tag of green school 2011 by C.P.R. Environmental Education Centre (CPREEC), a centre of excellence of the Union environment ministry and the C.P. Ramaswami Aiyar Foundation, in Chennai.
His teachers use a cloth duster to wipe the blackboard. His friends always segregate waste and dump the plastic and paper garbage in two different dustbins, non-degradable and bio-degradable.
Almost all his classmates prefer wearing cotton clothes to synthetic shirts.
Passing over chocolates because of their plastic wrapping, students here share kadalai mittai, dates and other traditional sweets for birthday treats.
“After we learnt about pollution and accumulation of plastic waste, we decided to cut down the use of plastic. Even at home,
I have told my parents about this. Now we do not use plastic vessels or buckets at home,” says class
10 student Y. Sandhiya.

Rizwanullah says he re-uses one-sided paper sheets. “We try to avoid plastic products to make our school plastic and litter-free,” he said.
Principal S. Solomon Devadoss said teachers teach not only science lessons but also the importance of preserving the environment, every day.
“We celebrate world water day and environment
day to inform our
students about nature and its resources. awarding a star to the best class in school, the one which generates the least waste,” he said.

It was class 2 that bagged the latest star. Headmistress Abitha Srinivasan said students use cloth or jute bags to bring their lunch. “We observed that many students even count the leaves to check the growth of plants.”
Dr Nanditha Krishna, director of CPREEC, told DC that her staff visit 25
to 50 schools in a year across the country to inform the school managements about green school concepts. “When children learn about eco-friendly living at a very early age, then it becomes a habit.
