The government on Thursday suspended 162 government teachers for su-bmitting fake bills to claim medical reimbursement worth Rs 2.29 crore. Around 31 teachers have already been suspended for the same reason in September.
This is for the first time in the history of the school education department that such a large number of teachers were suspended for committing financial irregularities, which is considered to be the biggest-ever medical reimbursement scam in the state. Enquiries revealed that the teachers had claimed reimbursement without undergoing any operation by submitting fake bills in the name of major Hyderabad-based hospitals during 2009-10 financial year.
Of them, nearly 70 teachers claimed Rs 1.8 lakh each citing treatment for diseases related to heart and brain. According to Mr Sambashiva Rao, principal secretary, school education, the government has decided to lodge criminal cases and recover the money.
Some bills were claimed by mandal education officers on behalf of teachers without their knowledge. Nalgonda district achieved the dubious distinction of topping the corrupt teachers list with a maximum of 71 cases, followed by Adilabad (47), Medak (11), Mahbubnagar (11), Khammam (10), Nizamabad (5), Warangal (3), Ranga Reddy (2) and Vizianagaram (1).
