The South Central Railway (SCR) has been sanctioned three new lines at a total cost of about Rs. 1,765 crore with an eye on new business and development of the region, in the Budget announced by the Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee.
At a press conference here on Friday, SCR General Manager M.S. Jayanth explained the significance of the new lines.
The 24-km new line proposed between Mellacheruvu and Janpahad in Nalgonda district at a cost of Rs. 174.56 crore aims to utilise the business potential in the cement belt.
The 309-km line between Nadekude and Srikalahasti to be taken up at a cost of Rs. 1,313 crore forms part of the all-important Grand Trunk route to New Delhi.
“With stations like Gudur bearing the brunt of cyclone, year-after-year, the new line will play a key role in development all along the North-South link,” the SCR General Manager said.
The third line is the 45-km Gudur-Durgarajapuram line, one for which Union Minister of Textiles Panabaka Lakshmi has been pitching for quite some time. The line will connect places and boost industrialisation in Nellore district, Mr. Jayanth said.
The three stretches sanctioned for doubling include the 24.47-km Guntur-Tenali stretch at a cost of Rs. 130 crore and the 81.43-km between Parbani and Mudkhed, costing Rs. 333 crore.
The doubling of the 175-km long line between Vijayawada and Machilipatnam, via Gudiwada, Bhimavaram, Narsapur at a cost of Rs. 796.8 crore was a project proposed with an intent to increase traffic and develop the area, he said.
Other features of the Budget that augur well for SCR are sanction of 16 new line surveys, two doubling surveys between Gooty and Dharmavaram (with electrification) and between Macherla and Nadikudi.
As for works slated for completion this year, they include new lines between Jagityal and Mortad, Khanapur and Homnabad, Nossam and Banaganapalli, Vishnupuram and Janpahad and between Gadwad and Pandurangswami.
Also, doubling sections include those between Guntakal and Raichur, Gooty and Pullampet and between Kondapuram and Tadipatri.
