By the end of a given day, 70,000 new puppies and kittens will be born, in the United States alone. By comparison, only 10,000 humans are born every day. This means that, unless the average person plans on having 7 pets each (an average household of 2.59 people would need to have 18 pets) there’s no way there will be enough homes for all the cats and dogs in the country. That’s why 6-8 million dogs and cats are taken to shelters every year, and 4-5 million of them have to be euthanized every year. In addition, there are 60-100 million feral cats in the United States, and the cost every year to U.S. taxpayers of disposing of these unwanted animals adds up to $2 billion.
