MUMBAI: British telecom major, Vodafone Group, said on Friday that its Indian arm has posted a 9% growth in revenue at 1.03 billion pounds during the first quarter ended June 30, 2011. The growth was largely due to a 30% increase in customer base, stabilizing mobile voice pricing in the market and a 70% growth in data revenue.
The Vodafone group as a whole reported a growth of 3.5% in revenue at 11.65 billion pounds for the same period.
For the financial year ended March 2011, the Indian unit had posted an adjusted operating profit of 15 million pounds, the first time in its four years of operations. In a statement, Vodafone said, as of June 30, 2011, its Indian arm had 26 million data customers, a year-on-year increase of almost 200%.
"The growth was driven by an increase in sales of data-enabled handsets and the continued impact of successful marketing campaigns run in conjunction with the sponsorship of key sporting events," the company said.
The UK based telco said its performance was still hit by the sluggish southern Europe market. Europe service revenue declined 1.3%.
On the Indian tax case, Vodafone said, "In respect of the Indian tax authority alleging potential liability of Vodafone International for failure to deduct Indian withholding taxes on the Hutchison transaction in 2007, the Supreme Court of India is expected to hear its appeal on the issue of jurisdiction as well as on the challenge to qualification, in the third calendar quarter of 2011."
