Home Minister P. Chidambaram today came under attack over the issue of withdrawal of FIRs against a Delhi-based hotelier from the Opposition which demanded his sacking from the Union Cabinet.
Referring to the cases against businessman S.P. Gupta, the BJP accused Chidambaram of misusing his office and committing a 'criminal offence' by 'favouring a former client'.
thing can be more serious. Chidambaram has misused his authority as Home Minister and ordered withdrawal of cases against Gupta.... He is not only guilty of improper conduct but also criminal offence. A criminal cannot be Home Minister," BJP leader Yashwant Sinha told reporters.

"Prime Minister should immediately sack him. We cannot allow his continuance in office for even a moment," he said.
The opposition alleged that Chidambaram, an eminent lawyer, had represented Gupta in the three cases in the past and unsuccessfully tried to get the FIRs quashed by the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court.
The BJP also demanded that the Prime Minister should give a clarification on the issue in both Houses of Parliament.
"This is an open and shut case. There is no ambiguity. Chidambaram should not be given the discretion of resigning but should be sacked immediately," Sinha said.
The BJP and other opposition parties paralysed business in Parliament demanding the resignation of Chidambaram. While the Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day, proceedings in Rajya Sabha were also disrupted.
Supporting BJP's demand, CPI leader D. Raja said: "These allegations appear to be very credible. It makes Home Minister's position untenable. Because he is not reacting to the allegations. He is keeping quite, dead silence. I do not why. If Home Minister continues to be in the thick cloud of allegations, it is a problem for the government. Home Minister should explain why he is quite. The Prime Minister should also explain his stand."
