1) SIMHA
After struggling with a series of flops that made him depressed, Balakrishna arrived with SIMHA to sweep dreadful records of Okka Magadu and others. This Boyapati Seenu directed flick came as a pain relieving balm to the weeping Telugu Cinema Industry. Though the story line is very simple, powerful dialogues and action packed performance from Balayya made this movie the highest grosser of the year. Though it is made with a moderate budget of 18 crores, Simha collected a whoofing 50 crores. SIMHA rejoiced the fans of Nandamuri clan who are desperately waiting for a hit.
2) ROBO
Quite rarely, a movie becomes a hit even before its release and Rajnikanth’s ROBO is one among them. The sci-fi movie directed by one of the costliest and talented commercial movie directors in India, S. Shankar has rocked almost all the BOs in India. With a dose of oomph from Aishwarya Rai, along with the musical magic of Oscar winner AR Rahman, the film collected more than 40 crores in Tollywood. For the kind of visual effects that have set standards of Indian cinema along with a strong message regarding life and lust, ROBO is the king of TFI's 2010 Box Office.
3) MARYADA RAMANNA
When every top director is running for a star combination, SS Rajamouli proved the odd once again with an experimented screenplay. Choosing ace comedian Sunil as the hero and out-of-mill actress Saloni as the heroine, Telugu cinema's Jakkana delivered a surprise hit after the blockbuster success of 'Magadheera'. Though it is made with a budget of 15 crores, the film managed to pull around 30 crores, thereby remaining as a second highest grosser of 2010.
4) BRINDAVANAM
Though his earlier films like Kantri and Adhurs ran successfully with a positive talk, they turned out to be normal fares at the BO. However, Jr.NTR finally made the cash registers ringing with family oriented action flick BRINDAVANAM. Jr NTR's first time classy performance along with a hot glamour touch from Kajal and Samantha, directed by Vamsi Paidipalli, the movie enthralled the audience to the maximum. It is made with a whopping budget of 25-30 crores. By collection some where around 35-40 crores, it also pulled producer Dil Raju to the shore, who is in a sea of debts.
5) DARLING
It seems that Prabhas has learned after a while of some mass entertainers that only class films can make the difference to his career. Love story specialist Karunakaran has come up with Prabhas as DARLING. Though it is made with a budget of 15 crores, the film collected around 25 crores. Luck also played a major role in bailing out the producer from a possible deficit as there are no films that are released along with this flick.
Cliched story lines, weak screenplays, yawn-inducing comedy, hackneyed stories, obscenely huge budgets and aimless marketing gave a poor ride to the viewers this year. The success rate in the Telugu film industry dipped from 15 per cent last year to 10 per cent in 2010 driving the industry into great losses. One hopes the industry learns from its losses and mistakes, imposes self discipline in budgets, finds newer talents and bounces back with bigger hits in the New Year.
