As heat wave conditions prevailed across North and Central India on Tuesday, Maharashtra's Vidharbha recorded the highest temperature at a blazing 50ºC.
Nagpur was in close competition at 44ºC while Delhi, Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Hyderabad and Pune were all at 40ºC in spite of a slight fall in the mercury level after Monday.
The meteorological department has predicted a fall in the temperatures and thunderstorms and a bit of rain over the plains and over the Himalayas. In the hills, Shimla in Himachal was a balmy 25ºC while Mukteshwar in Uttarakhand was a very cool at 19ºC.
For Delhiites, it was another sweltering day as temperatures remained above the 40ºC mark, but the weathermen assured of some respite from heat over the next couple of days.
"The wind circulation pattern has changed. Earlier, the westerly winds were bringing the heat, now a change in the weather system is causing a cooling effect," PTI quoted SC Bhan, the Director of the Delhi Meteorological Office, as saying.
He said the maximum temperatures could see a decline between two and four degrees this week. The maximum temperature in the capital was 40.5ºC, two notches above normal. The weatherman said the temperature would fall by a degree on Wednesday due to easterly winds caused by an extra tropical system.
The minimum temperature in the capital was 26.8ºC, three degrees above normal. Bhan said Delhi and NCR could have dust storm or thunderstorm while light rains can lash the hills.
The weather office said an upper air cyclonic circulation was active over Rajasthan and Punjab, which should help bring down the mercury in the northwest region, including Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, parts of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
