Autonagar Surya Review : A misfired missile

Title : Autonagar Surya (2014) Producer : K. Achi Reddy Music Director : Anoop Rubens Starring : Naga Chaitanya, Samantha Story-screenplay-dialogues-Direction: Deva Katta “Autonagar Surya” is one of the films which has undergone huge financial problems and has been waiting to see the light since a long time now. Finally “Autonagar Surya” arrives after passing all the hurdles. Let us see how the film is,and if Naga Chaitanya impressed the audience . Story: Story opens in a train scene, where Surya(Naga Chaitanya) looses his parents in order to save a teenage girl from a cruel person named Indra(Madhu) who tries to rape her. After that incident, Surya becomes an orphan and grows up in a place called Autonagar and develops his interest in motor mechanism. He finally becomes a talented mechanic who can assemble and dismantle and repairs any and every vehicle that consists a motor. The story gets into 1990′s and runs in the same time frame. Autonagar is under Indra’s control, who is a mayor for that area too. His gang includes Ajay, Jayprakash Reddy ,who stands as the strength for the cruel mayor , and acts as per the instructions given by him. On the otherside ,Surya has a dream to make a car that runs with battery. For which, Surya needs to become a member in Autonagar’s workers union. And that union is again controlled by the mayor and his goons. Surya faces lot of troubles by the mayor gang, who rejects membership for Surya due to some personal rivalry. Hence, the hero Surya decides to fight against the system and wants to establish his business set up on his own. That will irk the villian gang and they keep trying to scatter Surya’s plans from time to time. From then, what does Surya do to cherish his dream to invent a battery car? and how does he manage to demolish the Mayor’s kingdom and becomes Autonagar Surya from an ordinary mechanic Surya forms rest of the story. Performances: Undoubtedly its an out and out one man show. That is none other than Naga Chaitanya. “Autonagar Surya” comes out as a surprise packiage for all Akkineni fans, as Chaitu has done an impressive job. He grabbed everyone’s attention with his much improved and matured acting abilities. Naga Chaitanya’s diction is improved very much. The way he rendered some powerful dialogues in his intro and also in the second half is a must watch. Above all his films so far, Naga Chaitanya has delivered some outstanding acting stuff. Stepping away from a boy next door image, Chaitanya handles his role with an ease. Samantha as usually, looked so beautiful and has decently performed making full justice to her character. But the director could have given more importance to her role in the second half too. Nandu, who does Surya’s friend role also impressed everyone with his amazing acting skills. He has got a very good role after 100% love. And let us not forget Jayaprakash Reddy, Ajay’s contribution too. They have also done the justice for their roles. Brahmanandam and MS Narayana are not used well. They have got very small roles in the film. Though there is a song on Brahmanandam, that is not sufficient to make the audience laugh enough. Last but not the least, Madhu who played the dreaded Mayor in the film deserves a special mention for his terrifying performance. Tollywood directors and producers can rely on him who are looking for a ferocious Telugu villian . Technical Aspects: Deva Katta has disappointed with his flat screenplay and boring second half. The way he took off the movie in the first half, has raised more expectations on the movie. A normal story which is well written but badly executed. Editing is a big drawback in the film, as the most of the scenes could have been trimmed to make it look short. But it hasn’t been done, and in result film runs more than two and half hours. That is nothing but a burden to the audience to bear a film which has got nothing much in it. Cinematography is ok. Music is good . Songs could have been much better but back ground scores are good in bits and pieces. Strengths: -Energetic performance by Naga Chaitanya -Decent background scores by Anup Rubens -Nice camera work -Gripping first half -few dialogues that paid off here and there Weaknesses: - Lagging second half -Poor editing -Uselss songs in the beginning of the second half on Brahmanandam and an item song in the pre climax - Weak screenplay -Poor climax which wasn’t convincing and not satisfactory at all -No enough comedy in the second half -Not used the talented artistes like Brahmanandam,Sai Kumar to their strengths. Final Verdict: Despite of the much hyped first half, the film disappoints in the second half and ends up no where. Do not keep any high expectations on the film, as the disappointment is guaranteed . Just watch it for power packed performance of Naga Chaitanya, that too if you are a hardcore fan of Akkineni family. Otherwise, better to watch in on small screen sometime later. Filmcircle Rating : 2.75/ 5
